2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
Advantages, disadvantages...
Hope this turns into an AK-47 vs. AR-15 style debate... |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
Keep hoping.....:tongue_ma:

Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
2 3/4 vs 3" - it depends on your needs.
For instance, if I'm looking to make a precise shot at 200 yards, I'd go with an AR15. If I'm looking for more knock down or penetration power (preferably at a closer range) I'd go with an AK47 :D |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
more shot in the 3 inches. That is outweighed by the excess recoil.
stick to 2 3/4. |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
2 3/4 is getting hard to find here. With the requirement for non-lead shot for waterfowl hunting, most hunters have switched to 3" magnums to have a hope of bringing them down instead of just wounding them.

Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
:D SF is right...no major advantage that I can think of.
I roll my own,so the sky is the limit. I prefer 2 3/4 over the 3 any day. Capacity Baby !! :>) Ballistics show the advantages are small change. The bad guys aren't counting buckshot pellets when you're shooting at them either. :bear_w00t::D:bear_w00t: |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
Wing shooters I have talked to claim no real advantage in 3 inch until you move up to 3 1/2 inch magnum, but you are approaching the recoil of the 10 gauge...ouch. :no_ma:

I think they would work well in a single shot. |

Agree with most of the board that 2 3/4 makes for the best balance. That said, I use 3 1/2" #4 shot in my turkey gun. Can pattern well enough to tear an old blue head up outwards of 70 yards with an X-full choke in my Rem 870 super express. But recoil is a B!TCH! Not a small fellow and there's no way I could stand up to a morning duck hunt or any other multi shot hunt with those bastiges as my load. |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
2 3/4 inch slugs,,,1100 feet per second and accurate...chamber fine in any pump..and triple OOO buck.
I had a mossberg 500 combat pack with a pistol grip and used the 3inch magnums with OO or OOO buck...it was almost too much...hell on the wrist. I tell people go with the 20 gauge...20G. slugs and OOO buck. Shot from a 14" barreled 12 gauge will spread one inch per yard....18" barrel a little less....thats a 25" pattern at 25 yards. At 25 yards, I would use a slug...I also advise to use a tactical mix of loads....for example...2 OOO buck first...then 2 slugs...the rest OOO or OO buck..( I prefer OOO buck because the pellet size is not that much smaller...but more pellets on target) |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
3" - unnecessary.
BUT in the spirit of a moneymatters ak47 bashing, you armchair warriors have no idea what survival means. When you are out with your kevlar and your puny 2-3/4" underpowered killing weapons, I'll have my scoped 1000-yard shotguns with a true man's load, 3" shells. Plus you can't even reload your silly 2-3/4" shells, and they can't shoot two shots in an area the size of a quarter at 500 yards with no wind and a benchrest. Who ever taught you to drop your shotguns in the mud, anyway? You are all fools. All in good fun, MM. :bear_tongue: :D |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
2and3/4 will fit in any shotgun, fit in hand better, easier to load into pump, less recoil, more shots per pound, less expensive. like the remington brand.

Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
Both are fine....but prefer 2.75" over 3.00" - they both have plenty of payload and power...perhaps if I were waterfowling...I'd get the biggest payload/most power available.
Just killed a deer at 100 yards with Remington Buckhammer 2.75" Slug - 1.25 oz....the 3.00 Buckhammer is 1.375 oz and just a touch slower but overall 10% more energy that the 2.75"....but I still had 3000 ft-lb energy at muzzle ...very powerful round - tons of recoil....but any man should be able to shoot a few rounds without any problem....you don't have to be a tough guy....but come on, it is just a heavy recoiling shotgun...might bruise your shoulder in the summer with just a t-shirt. Dropped a 220# Michigan Whitetail in 15 feet. Busted front shoulder - destroyed heart. 12Ga = 0.72 Caliber...this soft lead slug expanded to over 1.00" diameter, 100% weight retention. Why would you ever need more than a 2.75" ...unless you are looking for more payload for ducks and the like. For thise that live in shotgun deer country....an 870 Rem Pump with a Rifled barrel and scope and Remington Buckhammer Slugs....3 hole touching group at 100 years.....as accutare as my rifles. You can sight for 100 yards and drop is 7.5" at 150yrds...-22 inches at 200 yards....I'd make that 200 yards shot with hold-over from a well braced shooting position. I did it on paper from a bench - group the size of a small coffee saucer. These slugs are amazing. Sorry to make it a slug discussion. Just stick with 2.75.....they work in every 12ga gun ever made. |
Re: 2 3/4" Shotgun Shells Vs. 3"
Factors to weigh:
Cost Weight Recoil / controllability Practice practice practice Stopping power I much doubt the need for 3". You young guys like to argue about stopping power. If you miss, because of recoil or lack of practice, stopping power doesn't matter. If I shoot someone once with #4's from 30 yards, they will stop their bad acts, I promise. Get your butts out there and practice. |
